In short

Removing a wisdom tooth at a private practice in Australia typically costs $300–650 per tooth, with most patients paying around $480 (research to 7 Sept 2026). Simple removals sit at the low end and surgical removals of impacted teeth at the top. Sedation or a general anaesthetic in hospital is charged on top, and Medicare does not cover the dental fee for adults.

What affects the cost

  • Whether the tooth is erupted or impacted in bone, which decides simple versus surgical removal.
  • How many teeth are removed and whether they are done in one visit.
  • Whether a general dentist or an oral surgeon does the procedure.
  • The type of anaesthetic: local only, IV sedation, or general anaesthetic in hospital.
  • How close the roots are to the nerve, which may require a CBCT scan and a more careful technique.
  • Whether the consultation, x-rays and follow-up review are included in the fee.

How this is calculated

  1. Total = teeth to remove × fee + sedation or general anaesthetic.
  2. Out-of-pocket = total − insurance or rebate.
  3. Ranges come from fees published by private practices in each country (research to 7 Sept 2026). An examination and written treatment plan are needed for an exact fee.

Insurance and rebates in Australia

Medicare does not rebate the dentist's fee for wisdom tooth removal. Under extras cover, a simple extraction is usually general dental, while surgical removal of an impacted tooth is major dental with a twelve-month waiting period and a per-tooth benefit up to the annual limit. If the teeth are removed under general anaesthetic in a private hospital, hospital cover can pay the hospital and anaesthetist fees, which is often the larger part of the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Should I have all four out at once?

If all four need removing, doing them together means one recovery and one sedation fee, which is usually cheaper overall. If only one is causing trouble, ask whether the others really need to come out.

Do I need sedation or a general anaesthetic?

Most simple removals are done comfortably with local anaesthetic. Sedation is worth considering for multiple impacted teeth or if you are very anxious, but it adds a significant cost and needs someone to take you home.

Why is an oral surgeon more expensive than my dentist?

Oral surgeons handle deeply impacted teeth and those near the nerve, and they can provide sedation in-house. For a straightforward erupted tooth a general dentist is usually fine and cheaper.

What is dry socket and will it cost extra?

Dry socket is a painful healing complication in the days after removal, more common with lower wisdom teeth and smokers. Most practices treat it as part of after-care without charge, but ask what follow-up is included.

Do wisdom teeth always need removing?

No. Teeth that have come through cleanly and can be cleaned are often left alone. Removal is usually advised for repeated infection, decay, damage to the neighbouring tooth or cysts.
