Revenue per dentist calculator
Production per clinician, per day and per hour.

Revenue per dentist is the production of each full-time-equivalent clinician, broken down to a daily and hourly figure. Divide annual dentist revenue (excluding hygiene) by FTE dentists, then by clinical days and clinical hours. In most markets a general dentist produces $3,000–$5,000 a day, though procedure mix and fee schedule move that a long way in either direction. The number is most useful for capacity planning: it tells you what an extra clinical day or an extra associate is likely to add.
How this is calculated
- Per dentist = revenue ÷ FTE.
- Per day = per dentist ÷ clinical days.
- Per hour = per day ÷ hours.
Frequently asked questions
What should a general dentist produce per day?
$3,000–$5,000 a day is common in most markets for general practice. Implant, cosmetic and prosthodontic work pushes the figure higher; a schedule heavy with exams and small restorations sits lower. Use the figure to plan capacity, not to compare individuals whose case mix differs.
How do I calculate FTE dentists?
Add up the clinical days each dentist works per week and divide by the days a full-time dentist works at your practice, commonly four or five. Two dentists on three days each is 1.5 FTE at a four-day full-time week. Be consistent about what counts as full time.
Should I include hygiene revenue?
No. Hygiene has its own cost base and its own measure in the Hygienist Profitability Calculator. Including it would flatter the dentist figure and hide the real contribution of each department.
What data do I need from my practice software?
A provider production report for the year, with hygiene providers excluded, and the roster showing each dentist's clinical days and hours. Use collections rather than gross fees if your software allows, since write-offs vary by provider.
