Estimate what a whitening treatment will cost you after any insurance or rebate.

Professional whitening in Australia is typically $380–680, with $530 a fair middle figure (research to 7 Sept 2026). Take-home kits from your dentist sit at the lower end and in-chair treatments at the upper end. Chemist-shelf products are far cheaper but weaker and are not included in this range.

What affects the cost
- Method: take-home custom trays are the cheapest professional option; in-chair treatments with a light cost the most.
- Combination packages that pair an in-chair session with take-home trays cost more but hold the result longer.
- You will need a check-up and often a clean first, so add those fees if they are not recent.
- Top-up gel every year or two keeps the shade, and is a small ongoing cost.
- Existing fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten, so front-tooth restorations may need replacing to match.
- Sensitivity treatment before or after whitening sometimes adds a small fee.
- City-centre and cosmetic-focused practices charge more than general practices.
How this is calculated
- Total = treatments × fee.
- Out-of-pocket = total − insurance or rebate.
- Ranges come from fees published by private practices in each country (research to 7 Sept 2026). An examination and written treatment plan are needed for an exact fee.
Insurance and rebates in Australia
Whitening is cosmetic, so there is no Medicare rebate and most private health extras policies exclude it outright. A handful of funds pay a small amount towards take-home trays under general dental, but check your policy wording before counting on it. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule does not cover whitening.
Frequently asked questions
Why is dentist whitening so much dearer than supermarket kits?
Dentists can use much stronger peroxide gel and custom trays that keep it on the teeth and off the gums. The result is faster, more even and longer lasting, and you are checked first for problems that whitening would make worse.
How long does whitening last?
Typically one to three years, depending on tea, coffee, wine and smoking. A top-up with take-home trays every year or so keeps the shade without paying for a full treatment again.
Will whitening work on my crowns and fillings?
No, only natural enamel changes colour. If you have visible front-tooth restorations, ask your dentist whether they would need replacing afterwards to match, which can make whitening a much bigger job than expected.
Is in-chair whitening better than take-home?
It is faster, usually one visit, but studies find the final shade is similar to a couple of weeks of take-home trays. Take-home is cheaper, and the trays can be reused for top-ups.
Does whitening damage teeth?
Dentist-supervised whitening is safe for healthy teeth, though temporary sensitivity is common. Unregulated salon whitening or overuse of strong gels can harm enamel and gums, which is why it is restricted to dental professionals in many countries.
