Clear aligner / Invisalign cost calculator
Estimate what a clear aligner course will cost you after any insurance or rebate.

A course of clear aligners such as Invisalign in Australia typically costs $4,500–9,000, with most patients paying around $6,750 (research to 7 Sept 2026). The fee usually covers the scan, all aligner sets and monitoring visits, but retainers afterwards are often extra, so this calculator adds them. Medicare does not pay for orthodontics, and extras cover treats it as a separate category.

- Total before rebate
- $7,150
What affects the cost
- How complex the tooth movement is and how many aligner sets the plan needs.
- Whether treatment is with a specialist orthodontist or a general dentist.
- The brand of aligner and whether refinements after the first set are included.
- Whether attachments, elastics or interproximal reduction are needed.
- Whether retainers and follow-up visits are included in the fee.
- Whether one arch or both arches are being treated.
How this is calculated
- Total = courses (usually 1) × fee + retainers after treatment (both arches).
- Out-of-pocket = total − insurance or rebate.
- Ranges come from fees published by private practices in each country (research to 7 Sept 2026). An examination and written treatment plan are needed for an exact fee.
Insurance and rebates in Australia
There is no Medicare rebate for orthodontics in Australia, and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule specifically excludes it. Extras policies that include orthodontics usually have a twelve-month waiting period and either an annual limit or a lifetime limit per person, often between one and three thousand dollars, and some pay only on treatment by a specialist orthodontist. Enter the total benefit your insurer confirms in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners more expensive than braces?
Usually similar for comparable cases, with aligners sometimes a little dearer for complex movements and cheaper for minor ones. Ask for a quote for both from the same practice.
Do I need retainers afterwards, and are they included?
Yes, retainers are essential to stop teeth relapsing, and you will likely need replacements every few years. Many practices bill the first set separately, which is why this calculator has a field for them.
What do mail-order aligners leave out?
Usually in-person examination, x-rays, attachments and supervision of the movement. They can be cheaper for very minor cases but carry more risk if bite problems or gum disease are missed.
What if my teeth are not straight at the end of the first set?
Refinement aligners are common. Check whether the quoted fee includes unlimited refinements or charges for each extra set, as that changes the true cost.
How long does aligner treatment take?
Minor crowding can take 4 to 6 months; typical cases 12 to 18 months; complex cases longer. Longer treatment often means more aligners and visits, which is reflected in the fee.
